Based on the French comedy Le Tueur, The Killer (2023) is a Netflix Original directed by David Fincher, starring Michael Fassbender in the title role. The old killer has been on the job for years and finally seems to get his way out of it when the murders go wrong. In retaliation, his beloved Magdalena is attacked and he decides to go for revenge.
Killer teeters between artful noir and straight-up revenge action as Killer begins stalking him. Fassbender is a meticulous killer but his patience seems to have worn thin. He gives Patrick Bateman a sociopathic vibe with a taste for music to tune out the horror, but the Killer here is more complex than that, he has feelings
The soundtrack incorporates the David Fincher style while the rock music that accompanies Killer’s story frees us from it. It allows viewers to become one with the killer, feeling the adrenaline, fear and his emotions.
The image counts down to what appears to be the cacophony of Killer’s mind. We get a Rear Window-like shot, a glimpse of life through the window that contrasts sharply with Killer’s life. There is also a nice shot of the Dominican Republic but because the film is set in so many places, it doesn’t do the rest of it justice like Paris and New Orleans And, in terms of action movies, Killer has created a cool action sequence that perfectly matches David Fincher’s aesthetic. There’s no dialogue, just a straightforward action showing everyone’s personality. A brute killer is all brunt force who loses his cool when he thinks he’s about to lose it. The killer is strategic and knows his weaknesses. He keeps breaking his magic by not getting involved with the system, and he almost always ends up doing what he wants. The acting of the secondary characters is wonderful, especially Magdalena, her brother, the taxi driver and the customer. ItIt isn't consistent with the movie's tone. Michael Fassbender certainly does a fine job as the stone cold killer with a secret. So does Tilda Swinton as the expert, stealing the scene as an eloquent killer. His character is an easily defined prop but one can tell it doesn’t feel out of place. He attracts spectators as if he were a killer.
Some plot holes are glossed over. In a big city, finding contractors’ cabs is a little too easy for Killer. The outcome matters until no one is looking after him when he gets in a taxi in broad daylight and the driver dies in the city at his girlfriend and her brother's house Like the man on the plane has a red herring tons but no results.
The story is an alternative choice as Killer drones into different aspects of life, the mundane aspects of life, his views on human nature and what it takes to be a killer. It gives us a lot of insight into his mind. But the fact that this is the beginning of the film makes it unmemorable and tedious until the Death Eater makes his move.
